Our FTC (Federal Trade Commission) has been busy focusing on the fine jewelry industry. While most of their focus has been on lab grown diamonds and gemstones, new guidelines regarding karat gold, silver and platinum have been issued . In my view some of it’s a bit scary.
Under the old guidelines the industry could not describe a product as gold, silver or platinum unless the gold was a minimum of .417% (10Kt) 925 PPT (parts for thousand) for silver and 500 parts per thousand for platinum. Under the new guidelines, the threshold for platinum is maintained but the FTC ELIMINATED them for gold and silver. The word “Sterling” stamped on a piece still requires 925ppt to be used but while the FTC did say we must still include a clear and accurate disclosure of purity, we can call it gold or silver, when in fact the item only contains a smidgeon of the metal.
At Medlars Jewel Masters, we strongly disagree with these new rules. Are we going to advertise “solid gold jewelry” and in the fine print say something like “Priced in 1 karat gold”? Do consumers really understand what the definition of a karat is?* How many will confuse 8 karat with 18kt? What happens when skin turns green and oxidation occurs in just a few weeks? Is this really fine jewelry? Not surprisingly, JTV (the jewelry television network) supports the new guideline.
Our commitment to you is that we will NEVER go below 14kt. (58.5% pure) in gold 90% pure in platinum and 92.5% pure in silver.
*A karat, when used with gold, is a unit of purity - 24-karat gold is pure gold, but usually you alloy (mix gold with a metal like copper or silver) to make jewelry. Each karat indicates 1/24th of the whole. So if a piece of jewelry is made of metal that is 18 parts gold and 6 parts copper, that is 18-karat gold.
What Does It Mean To Re-shank a Ring? Re-Shank and Repair...
The term “re-shank” refers to the removal and replacement of the portion of the ring that goes around your finger. Over time this part of a ring becomes thin from constant surface contact. The shank will bend out of shape and, if previously sized, will crack open at the sizing cut. Whether the ring is gold, platinum or silver, the first step is to inspect the shank to determine how much needs to be replaced. This may only be a quarter of the ring but more often at least half to a full shank replacement. The old worn out ring section is removed and a new piece matching the color, width and depth of the remaining healthy shank, is fabricated. The new section is welded onto the existing shank and burnished until the weld joints disappear.
There is a natural taper from the top of the shank to the bottom. If the ring has been enlarged 3 or more sized this taper may become too thin to be durable. We solve this problem by creating a reverse taper that allows for the appropriate thickness and width of the shank at the bottom of the ring.
Time Is Running Out! Custom Design, Just in Time...
I don't mean to sound like a pushy salesman but if you're thinking about having a custom design made for Christmas, I urge you to come in ASAP. Christmas is only about 10 weeks away.
The following is a typical timeline, during normal normal business for a custom design requiring gem setting.
Design time: 1 week Wax creation: 3 days Casting: 1 day Setting: 1 week* Appraisal: 4 days Total time: 3.5 weeks
Importantly, this timeline assumes no queuing at any given step. With gem setting there are ALWAYS designs waiting in the queue. *With the normal Christmas rush, the length of time needed to complete a setting can easily lengthen to three weeks, making the total time almost 6-weeks from beginning to end. The elves are already very busy! We never want to miss a promised delivery date so the sooner you can come in, the better.
