For MOM Made By Kids Celebrate MOM at Medlars Jewelry. Sat, May 6, 2017, 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM
Bring your kids, grandkids or anyone who would enjoy making a gift that mom will treasure forever. While at Medlars, the child will create a pendant and let our jewelers do the rest! It will be ready to pick up in time for Mother's Day. No purchase necessary, this is our gift to your mom. Appropriate for ages 4-10 years old.
WHAT TO EXPECT Reserve a time to bring your little one in and make mom's complementary necklace. It takes about 30-minutes to color a rose or butterfly design. Once it's done, Medlars will add your initials and date. In about 48-hours, we will surround it with a sterling silver bezel and hang it on a 18" silver chain. It will be ready to pick up prior to Mother's Day.
Dogwood Flower Collection:
When Chapman found Rebecca Hook jewelry, he knew it was a perfect line for his customers. The collections are feminine and delightful. Each piece draws from the colors and textures of her personal experiences. From the wrought iron balconies of Charleston, the vibrant corals of the Bahamas, and the dogwood blossoms of Kentucky each piece brings nature closer to you.
Rebecca Hook spent her early years around her parents' jewelry business in Florida where she learned firsthand the intricacies of jewelry design and manufacturing. After earning a degree in International Business from the College of Charleston, as well as studying the techniques of jewelry design at the American Jewelers Institute in Portland, Oregon, Rebecca settled in the Bluegrass State of Kentucky with her husband and their three children.
Rebecca's designs are strong in form yet delicate in nature and speak to the romantic spirit in every woman. Each of her pieces is crafted by lost wax casting and finished with satin texture, a special electroplated coating to prevent tarnish and semi-precious gemstones.* She is known for using high quality materials and detailed workmanship.
With prices starting at $59, there is something for everyone’s budget.
*Not all Rebecca Hook's designs have gemstones. Genuine semi-precious gemstones are used when it is a part of the design.
Vermeil: Is It Real Gold?
Gold vermeil, pronounced vur-MAY, enables us to wear glamorous gold jewelry at a fraction of the price. By definition gold vermeil or gilded silver, is a heavy gold plating on sterling silver,* not base metal that can cause an allergic reaction. Vermeil jewelry will retain value over gold plated base metal jewelry because of it's entirety of precious metal.
Even though vermeil has a thicker coating than other plated jewelry, using an abrasive polish will eventually remove the gold surface. If your vermeil jewelry starts to oxidize or tarnish we recommend that you rinse it in a liquid silver cleaner to remove any unsightly discoloration and make it look fabulous again. Compared to other gold plated jewelry the probability of repairing vermeil jewelry is much higher and can often be repaired using laser technology, which Medlars has.
The FTC regulates jewelry industry standards stating that vermeil can not be less than 10 karat gold with a minimum surface thickness of 2.5 microns pure gold. Which means in order to achieve the minimum gold content requirement for Vermeil the silver surface would need to be 6 microns of 10K gold (2.5 x 24/10 = 6 microns), 18K plating will require 3.33 microns and 14K will require 4.29 microns.
At Medlars we seek out jewelry manufactures that adhere to these standards.
*A minimum of sterling silver which is 92.5% fine silver.
Leanna Murphy: Jack of All Trades GIA AJP, Digital Marketing Manager
Leanna has been part of the Medlars core since 1999. She came here in a very unorthodox manner, but if you know her, that is not surprising. It started with her husband, who used to date the daughter of one of our master jewelers, Roger Huckabee. When Michael and Leanna decided to get married he said that they had to have Roger make their rings. Even though she had not heard of Roger or Medlars, she thought…why not? As luck would have it, after their wedding, Roger called Leanna asking if she would like to work at Medlars.
At the time, there were just four people working in the store and that included Chapman Stout, the owner of Medlars. Fast forward to today and there are 10. The growth hasn’t just been in employees either. It meant that the way things were done had to change. Think about how we shop and communicate today. Some of those methods didn’t even exist when Leanna started. She quickly became interested in the technological systems Medlars was using and began to update them. She has evolved with modern technology and implementation of a superior customer experience.
Utilizing her background in merchandising, Leanna started out on the sales floor and soon learned about diamonds, coins, bullion and designing custom jewelry. At the time, dot-com was beginning to boom, email was still new and there were only 2 computers in the store. As sales increased, a revision to inventory control and customer communication was necessary. Leanna quickly realized she had an aptitude for this. Twice, she has helped develop point of sales systems and now oversees e-commerce. Just as Medlars needs to have the newest equipment to make jewelry, they must also have the newest systems to give their customers what they desire. Leanna has learned to adapt for each step of this process. As Carl Rogers said "The only person who is educated is the one who has learned how to learn and change."
Now it’s evident that customers need an online visual experience. Leanna has always had an interest in photography and images are a must for any website. Medlars sent her to the Brooks institute of photography in Santa Barbara for a jewelry photography class. It was a 2-day course where she learned the basics of macro photography. She came back and has been shooting and editing photographs ever since. At first, it was just product shots and now it has grown to include live models.
Leanna creates virtually all of the photos you see on Medlars website, Instagram, Facebook pages and in our newsletters. She is our go-to IT person addressing all the daily technical issues and research for what we will need next. Jewelry photography is so specialized that Leanna also taught herself to use complex Adobe software and understands the basics of programming code. She is an integral part of designing and managing the Medlars website.
We know that the future is growing ever more mobile. Leanna will be the one who helps Medlars keep up and continue to be at the forefront of customer service. Today you can research, find what you want and purchase everything straight from your phone. Creativity comes in all forms at Medlars and we're lucky to have someone as talented as Leanna.
